In 2023 I completed my PhD in English Literature at University College London. My research considered the relationship between geometry and drama in the seventeenth century, and I was primarily interested in ideas of motion, space, interactivity, identity, and how people and objects 'fit' together. I pursued the playfulness of geometric space on English stage-spaces, as well as the ways in which people navigated a kinetic and confusing era of mathematical discovery.
My PhD lasted four long and wonderful years, and to bid farewell I have been working on a photographic series centred around shape, play, and selfhood. This series has been ongoing since late 2023 and will last for much of 2024.
While my work typically utilises saturated colour, this series uses only black and white 120 film in order to highlight the relationship between form and line. I use my Hasselblad CM to make all of these images, and do everything in-camera. I am building my own sets and props, and the only post-production work is the light cleaning up of imperfections. I've started off simply with this series, but have big ambitions that I am excited to pursue over the course of the year.
